Emotional support animals

The animal already helps. The letter makes it count.

Many people find comfort, safety and healing with an animal beside them. An ESA letter is what turns that into a housing protection you can actually use. We write ours through a careful, ethical process, not a form you fill out in five minutes online.

Available to Sunray clients after at least 30 days of therapy

The document

What an ESA letter actually is

An ESA letter is a legal document written by a mental health professional. It states that you have a mental health condition, and that having an animal helps with your symptoms. It can give you certain protections, like being able to live with your animal in housing that normally does not allow pets.

An Emotional Support Animal can make a real difference for people living with anxiety, depression, trauma, or other mental health challenges. The letter does not create that. It documents it, so that a landlord has something to work from.

The standard

What the law requires

At Sunray Psychotherapy we provide a comprehensive assessment after at least 30 days of therapy. That is long enough to understand what you are actually dealing with, and it is what keeps the letter defensible on both ethical and legal grounds.

  • You must have a diagnosable mental health condition, such as anxiety, depression, PTSD, or similar.
  • The letter must come from a mental health professional who knows your history.
  • There must be a clinical assessment showing how an animal helps reduce your symptoms.
  • An ESA is not the same as a service animal. ESA letters are for housing rights, not public spaces.

The process

How it works here

  1. You become a client

A minimum of 30 days with Sunray Psychotherapy, roughly four sessions. There is no way to shortcut this one, and any practice that offers to is not writing you a letter worth having.

  2. Your animal becomes part of the work

You and your therapist look together at the ways your animal provides emotional support, and how that fits into your treatment plan rather than sitting beside it.

  3. Your therapist completes the assessment

A comprehensive clinical assessment covering every legal requirement, written by the person who has actually been in the room with you.

  4. You receive the letter

A customized letter addressed to you directly, yours to share and send wherever you need it.

If all qualifications are met.

More than paperwork

With us, your ESA letter is part of your healing process, handled with care and professionalism. If that is the version you want, the first step is the same as it is for anything else here.
